Our History
The first meeting was a summer’s day on August 12, 1979, in the pastor’s garage. They met there, in Bro. Jack Cole’s garage, for three weeks and then moved to the Forrest Hotel Lobby. While they met there for the next four months, the basement was remodeled and designed with this new congregation’s needs in mind. There they continued until December of 1980.
During the months at the hotel, they were able to secure a plot of land, purchase the property, and construct a building. God blessed in these beginning years and the church saw great growth.
In 1983, the second phase of the building program was completed. Many new classrooms and office space was added to the church. This was also a great help to the Christian school to provide and promote the needed rooms.
The time came when Bro. Cole felt that God was leading him elsewhere. After praying about it for a few weeks, Bro. Cole felt impressed to recommend Dr. Billy Goolesby to the church. On June 1, 1986, the church called him as their new pastor.
After all that God had done for the church, the building program was not yet complete. On Mother’s Day of 1995, Rome Baptist Temple occupied their beautiful and brand-new sanctuary.
Bro. Goolesby was a mighty preacher of the Word of God. He stood like a pillar in challenging and changing times. God used him in meetings and conferences all over America.
In September of 2020, “Bro. Billy” went home to be with the Lord after what should have been a routine medical procedure. This was a sad day in the hearts of the Rome Baptist Temple.
After pastoring for twenty years in Colorado, Pastor R. Chris Hanks became the pastor of Rome Baptist Temple on June 6, 2021. With our new theme, “Arise, therefore, and be doing”, we are currently busy with updating and restoring our facilities, re-starting old ministries, and creating new ones. With a new vision of outreach and ministry, our church has fresh excitement that is stirring on the hill once again. We are eager to see what the Lord is going to do for His glory through Rome Baptist Temple.
